Unreal. The president halted deportations for 100 days but ICE is refusing to fully cooperate.
Without fail, those who claim to "enforce the law" are the most lawless. From ICE to every single police department in the United States.
Exclusive: Justice Department, FBI debate not charging some of the roughly 800 Capitol rioters in cases where no link seen to violence
Replying to @ScottHech: Meanwhile, entire crowds of Black & Brown teenagers get swept up, arrested, & charged as accomplices for being in the vicini…
A Judge rules Capitol riot suspect Eric Munchel to be released from jail pending trial, to be placed on home detention (except for work, etc.) supervised by a family friend, must not possess firearms, prohibited from traveling to DC except for legal reasons. #ZipTieGuy
Replying to @ScottHech: This is a tweet to remind you that if this person were Black (a) they would have been killed, (b) if not killed, would be re…
Alternative headline: The overwhelming majority of people in the United States support President Biden’s decision to recommit to the Paris Climate Accord & rejoin the World Health Organization. What is this garbage @ABC?
Replying to @joelockhart: I think we're a little too focused on what Trump voters think and feel. Time for the minority to be silent.
"...working against my will, I’m told almost every day that $0.26 per hr is... good, since the tailor shop is the highest-paying job [here]. Recently we pushed out 8 boxes of long johns, and I was given a $0.03 raise. Am I supposed to be grateful?" -Wesley
More people are currently jailed *pretrial* in the United States than are imprisoned at all in the entire 1.3 billion-person country of India
The U.S has a quarter of China’s 1.4 billion person population. But we cage half a million more people.
For all those horrified by the footage of the Tacoma cop car ramming into people last night: This is NYPD doing the same in June. Mayor De Blasio defended this action & the NYPD chief praised his force for their “restraint.” This is attempted murder.
“I’m not going to debate the merits of whether junkies need to be in the criminal system with you.” This is how NYPD views people who use drugs. Also, where are their masks?! NYPD, once again, making it clear that they don’t care about the most vulnerable in our communities
No surprise here. This is the same police force that sends undercovers to treatment centers to target people struggling w/ substance use. They pretend they’re struggling too. Trick people into helping them buy drugs & then arrest them for drug sale. The opposite of health/safety.
Good afternoon, it’s 2021 in a blue city in a blue state in a blue country and cops in NYC are still using “the odor of marijuana” to justify pretextual stops, and prosecutors who “don’t prosecute marijuana offenses” are allowing it to happen.
Unless cannabis is legalized, cops will use it to stop, search, & harass near-exclusively Black & Brown people living only in certain neighborhoods. Doesnt matter if DAs pledge to stop charging. Or police departments claim they’ll stop arresting for it. It’s a tool of oppression.
This is a tweet to remind you that if this person were Black (a) they would have been killed, (b) if not killed, would be remanded in a cage pending trial w/ no bail, & (c) that release w/ or w/o these kind of strict conditions is often more than enough to ensure return to court.
Seeing a lot of takes furious about Riley June Williams’ release in lieu of pretrial detention. I’m furious too. Not bc she’s released. I’m furious that the millions of Black & Brown people targeted & caged pretrial every year don’t get the same justice.
WITNESS: What's happened to Cassandra in Chicago is the story of the indifference of jails throughout U.S. Back in April she called 132x to save her husband from COVID in jail. Ignored. He died. Demanding change since. Ignored. More caged now than when he died. This is her voice:
