The more I think about Bashar al-Assad getting Covid, the more surprised I am that Russia - which invested hugely to keep him in power - didn't give him a vaccine. 💉
Maybe he was holding out for Pfizer. 🤔

President Bashar al-Assad of Syria and his wife, Asma, have Covid-19. State media says they are stable and will quarantine at home for two or three weeks.
Syria is suffering from a grave financial crisis that Mr. al-Assad seems to have no way out of.

I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all the women, especially the women of #Iraq, courageous women who continue to give life, in spite of wrongs and hurts. May women be respected and protected! May they be shown respect and provided with opportunities! #ApostolicJourney

“Kidnappers have now found a very creative and easy way of getting millions of naira”: @ruthmaclean on why northern Nigeria’s kidnap-for-ransom industry is growing and how boarding schools have become a hunting ground for kidnappers.
I am reading and appreciating (hard to say enjoying, given the topic) Joby Warrick's new book 'Red Line' about Syria and chemical weapons.
Nice to be reminded of the word azimuth, a much neglected piece of the lexicon.
A new attempt to hold Bashar al-Assad and his government accountable for war crimes, this time over their use of chemical weapons.

Hello! I'm looking for a researcher/journalist to help with a study of post-9/11 detention of Muslims in the U.S. -- preferably someone who speaks Arabic and/or Urdu. Paid position, excellent opportunity for aspiring journalists. Please DM if interested, and please share. Thanks!
I had forgotten how lovely it is to hang out socially with Saudis. Same mannerisms in real life as Clubhouse. Someone expresses humbleness on entry and it’s followed by “may Allah protect and preserve you and bless you and send you to Paradise”
Mr. Potato Head is no longer a mister. Hasbro, the company that makes the potato-shaped plastic toy, is giving the spud a gender neutral new name: Potato Head. The change will appear on boxes this year.
