Dozier’s deal has escalators and bonuses that could max it out at $49 million over the five years. He’s a clear part of a Royals team that’s looking to make noise in a suddenly ascendant AL Central. The excellent @ByRobertMurray first mentioned the sides were talking extension.

Third baseman Hunter Dozier and the Kansas City Royals are in agreement on a four-year, $25 million contract extension that includes a fifth-year option for $10 million, sources tell ESPN. Deal buys out two potential free agent years for the 29-year-old and starts this season.

The Boston Red Sox have acquired Bryant from the Chicago Cubs -- Zach Bryant, a 22-year-old right-hander. He's the PTBNL in the Josh Osich trade at last summer's deadline.

For anyone who was a fan of Terez Paylor -- and I know there are plenty of you -- the good people at @BreakingT made this T-shirt to honor him. All proceeds will go to the Terez A. Paylor Scholarship at Howard University, where Terez went to school:

For every 1,000 COVID-19 tests Major League Baseball has run this spring, one has returned positive. Here are the league’s latest numbers, which are very encouraging as games are set to begin Sunday.

I was struck today by Fernando Tatis Jr. and A.J. Preller’s relationship. The Padres didn’t manipulate Tatis’s service time. They let him be himself. This may sound shocking, but teams are capable of treating players well. From my Tatis essay at ESPN+:

The shame of Kevin Mather’s assessment of the Seattle Mariners team he runs isn’t that he said it out loud. It’s that he believes everything he said — the bigotry, the falsehoods, the mistreatment, the insults.

I’d like to thank the largest fly in human history for landing on my head in the middle of a live shot. Appreciated that, big fella.

As is our pal @JeffPassan, who explains if he’d rather have the Dodgers or the field; why San Diego gave $340M! to Fernando Tatis Jr; and which young star has inspired Jeff to threaten me, again, with song.

Spoiler: It's Juan Soto. If he's hitting .400 on June 1, we're winning a damn Grammy.

Among his many talents, here is one about Fernando Tatis Jr. you didn't know: He's a farmer. He'll even milk the cows. And as full squads convene at spring training starting today, it's evident why the world is his.

An essay at ESPN+ on The Year of Tatis:

There have been 13 total positive COVID-19 tests of the 4,336 taken upon the arrival of players and staff to spring training — nine players and four staff members. That’s 0.3%.

BREAKING: Free agent star Manny Machado has agreed to a deal with the San Diego Padres, league sources tell ESPN.

In the two years since this happened, the Padres have traded for Mike Clevinger, Blake Snell, Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Jake Cronenworth, Trent Grisham, Austin Nola and
Jurickson Profar, signed Ha-seong Kim and Drew Pomeranz, and signed Fernando Tatis Jr. to a $340 million deal.

Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto suffered a broken thumb in his throwing hand and is expected to miss up to a month. He should be ready for Opening Day but will be out a number of spring games after signing a free agent deal for five years and $115M.
